Papyrus: The Classic Font

About The Font

Boston-based designer Chris Costello developed his first script typeface, the Papyrus font, in 1982 as a personal project. Later, it was published by Letraset in 1984. At 23, Chris Costello designed this font after he finished college. It was his first font-designing project, and he was inspired by the murals found in ancient Egyptian temples. It is named after the ancient Egyptian papyrus scrolls used to write down religious and political instructions.

Chris Costello stated in an interview that the Papyrus font was created by accident. There was no immediate success with Papyrus. But when PostScript fonts were introduced for the desktop in the mid-1990s, it became a massive success. He also designed the Blackstone font, the Mirage font, and the Virus font. The Papyrus font, like Comic Sans, owes its popularity to Microsoft. Beginning with Office ’97, both typefaces were pre-installed on Microsoft Office.

Linotype and then ITC currently own the font. After a while, Elsner and Flake created an alternative font called Papyrus EF Regular with slight variations. In addition to 56 languages and 387 characters, it supports rough edges, irregular curves, and higher horizontal strokes in capitals. Unfortunately, it is only available in one style, Papyrus Regular. The font is supported in OpenType and TrueType formats.

Usage

Papyrus has become a popular typeface for website logo design, branding, signage, and even text decoration. It was created to represent the modern standard for handwritten fonts.

It is a delicate, script-like font often chosen for display purposes. Costello has said that he made the font so that it could be read on cheap paper. He also said that it could be used for different kinds of text without having to change fonts.

Other than these, some more common usages are:

  • Trailers
  • Presentations using PowerPoint
  • Restaurant menus
  • Brochures
  • Email marketing templates
  • Vehicle wraps
  • Signage and trade show displays
  • Promotional videos
